Many employers feel that as long as they pay their employees well, they'll stay motivated. But cleaning employees are looking for more that just good pay.
Here are some of the things that will help to keep your cleaning employees motivated:
- Recognition for a job well done
- Respect
- Trust
- Responsibility
- Opportunities for advancement
- Being informed of what's going on in the company
- Ablility to participate and offer feedback
If you'd like to create a work environment that encourages self motivation, follow these guidelines:
- Be a leader, but leave your ego at the door
- Never ask an employee to do something that you are not willing to do
- Earn the respect of your employees by acting and dressing professionally
- Get to know your employees
- Treat your employees and customers with respect
- Keep a positive attitude and greet your employees warmly
- Always compliment a job well done
- Don't make your employees feel as if you're always looking over their shoulders waiting for them to make a mistake
- Guide and train your employees so they perform to their best ability
- Correct them when needed and use it as an opportunity to train

I try to do all of the above and love it that we are so in sync on one of the main reasons I decided to branch out on my own. My previous job was structured so that I was 'self employed' and had to do the same to any help I had. Along with the complications around tax time, this arrangement left little wiggle room for rewarding the great team I assembled. Your article solidifies the confidence I have in my decision.

I don't really think that there are a lot of opportunities of advancement for the cleaning employees. I think that the best motivation for employees is payment. That's what really makes them happy.

I agree that good pay certainly attracts employees and helps to keep them happy, but I disagree that there are not opportunities for advancement. We had at least 3 levels of advancement in our company by the time we reached half a mil in sales and as you continue to grow there are even more opportunities. I know people who started off as a part time janitor, moved up into specialty cleaning then supervisor, then area manager, then operations manager. Even at the supervisor level you can make on average $27,000 - $35,000 a year.

Thanks for replying Jean, how long do you usually keep an employee on the same position before advance them up to the higher level?

That's going to vary depending on your needs and your employees. You want to let learn more about your employees and find out who has the potential and desire to advance.
I'm working on a supervisor training manual that I plan on releasing some time this year.

Our most important asset is our people, with out them any company can succeed. Take good care of them and they will take care of you and your customers. As owner I call each one personally and wish a Happy Birthday and send a Birthday card with a $ 30.00 gift certificate from a good local restaurant.Call them in Thanksgiving and appreciate all they did,and call in Christmas, only takes ONE minute, I have many of my employs for 12 years, and love them, and everybody in your organization will follow you.
